The Great Indian Dream

Sometimes I want to scream - scream

at my ineptitude;

Numb as horror, grief, heaviness,

despair pass by in equal measure.

Sometimes I want to scream - scream

at the bodies piling up by the roadside,

the air thick with charred bone dust,

the voiceless nameless common folk

gasping for air

Inside and outside hospital corridors

Sometimes I want to scream - scream

at an invisible virus funnelling

through countries and cities and families

pulling away loved ones to a

senseless death

Sometimes I want to scream - scream

at the lords in the gilded castle

choking out every last coin

from a weary migrant throat,

watching leerily as a child sucks on his

dead mother’s breast

Sometimes I want to scream - scream

at empty speeches bellowing out of

treacherous television sets,

plates clanging to the rhythm

of the emptiness in your head.

Sometimes I want to scream - scream

at lord folk playing roulette

with people’s lives and livelihoods,

desperate to clutch onto

power, greed, devotion.

Sometimes I want to scream - scream

Scream, scream, scream

All you want.

Scream into the crowd or

scream into the darkness.

Scream forever more,

because that is all

You and I can do.

the cries you never heard

it's funny how, now, after all this time, the littlest trigger set off memories of you - raw, unyielding, potent. last night, after a million years, i cried for you. not the dainty tears that slip off unnoticed from lowered eyes. not polite grief that can be seen, but not heard. not even sadness that finds solace in a pillow.

i cried. like a child learning the use of her lungs for the very first time. guttural, heart-wrenching, uncivilized tears.

i had buried your memory, the pain that comes with thoughts of your smile. the way you clench your teeth when tenderness awashes you. how you looked at me before leaning in to kiss me. your naked vulnerability in the face of everyday seperation. your hands as they tremble reaching out to touch me, your arms as they held me like i was your one sole possession in the world. i was, wasn't i?

your only possession. sole recipient of your love, keeper of your secrets, reader of your mind. the little hole in the tree where you stored your heart - albeit temporarily. your corny other half - a role that i reveled in.

i had forgotten all that. the time had passed when i went to sleep with your memory, dreamt of you, woke up with the pain of your absence. i was past anger, past what-ifs and why-nots. i had worked really hard on the forgetting, forgetting ultimately that a love like ours could never ever be forgotten.
buried - yes.
denied - maybe.
but, disregarded
without regret? - the unfinished
work of a few lifetimes.

where did it go - our love? did god use it elsewhere to make the world a better place? did he use it to obliterate hatred and collective pain? did He need it more than we did? if stupid, useless matter cannot be destroyed, but only transferred, can love just die like that? can it disappear without a trace? first love, now irrepressible grief. maybe i was created merely as a generator of powerful emotions. perhaps i was never meant to be, only dream.

last night, when my vision blurred - with sobs that dried-up my throat, i kept calling your name. with a head that throbbed mercilessly and a heart that felt dead, i wondered if the void you left behind would ever be filled. i pleaded, through incorrigible words, to the one who took a half of me away. i begged him not to leave me incomplete. i asked if he would give me another miracle, another you.

love streaks in like lightning, and never really leaves even after this world exhausts itself, and the other begins.

the end of my pathos.

leaves me, with one but question - will i still be looking for you in the beautiful depths of Jannah? will you be the reward i long for, after a lifetime of worship, good deeds and piety? will you then be the person of paradise that i spend eternity with? if so, i will but make peace with lending you out to another.

unread, unfulfilled

I hate myself for still wanting you even after you have held someone else in your arms, for dreaming about you every single minute whilst pretending to myself that you still care about me, for not having the strength to hate you, for talking to you even though you stopped caring about me, for feeling so alone, for believing you are still real. Most of all, I hate myself for falling so madly in love with you that I don’t know myself anymore..

*

I’m a horrible, pathetic person – unable to hold on, unable to let go. I’m one of those people you hear about, but wish you never meet. Sitting around weeping, wailing over the person who hurt me the most. Self-pity, the cruelest vice. Praying for death, the greatest tragedy. The solitude that used to comfort me, before I met you, is now ripping me up inside and out. I want to be happy, to be whole again without you; I just don’t know how..

*

Mediocrity – never ever ever afflict me. I used to know someone, in another life, he made me live a lifetime in a few hours, made me complete, made me believe I didn’t need anything but his love, made me believe in fairy tales and “happily ever after”s. One day, he took it all away. He took everything except the ability to believe in you, mediocrity. So, never ever ever afflict me.

*

I can’t stop thinking about you; your face keeps drawing circles in my mind. Your long-lost kisses stay on my lips, filling me with the sweetness of your love. A 1000-year-old dream you are, to me, to be fulfilled only with our first step into Jannah together..

*

Would you ever let the dream of us, you and me together, die? Would you crush it to bits with your own hands – the very hands that held me, touched me, loved me? Would your hands tell you never to touch me again? Would your eyes that looked at me with love the very first day tell you not to ever see me again? Would your body tell you never to hold me against you again? Would your heart tell you not to yearn for me again? Would your entire being tell you not to love me?

crazy much

a day of yore ago,
half a million smiles younger
you walked in -
off a fifth-floor street
and into my life.
i love you so crazy much.

on the corner of 29th and 8th, i stand -
armed with
lipless kisses,
a touchless caress -
tearless strife;
months and months
of not knowing,
never realising
what, when, how -
yet, never ever
meeting love's silent partner, despair.
i love you so crazy much.

you taught me
to love
irrevocably -
without sense,
without boundaries.
you leave me incomplete -
willing to give my entire life,
to hear you smile a minute long;
wanting to live 10 lifetimes
just to show you what i feel;
knowing every single day,
as the luckiest woman alive,
pink-tinged tomorrow is
just an arm's length away;
i love you so crazy much.

we laugh, obsess, infuriate,
cry, miss each other silly -
yet, at the end of the day, and during,
you breathe inside me,
see the sights i see,
feel the thoughts i think,
live the life i live
as my verve and secret whole -
you are me, in another soul.
i love you so crazy much.

half without you

fast forward,
lean behind -
sixty-six years,
and a teeny tiny half,
you walked me through
a hundred different
lifetimes or more.

i let go -
once, twice
on a street too crowded
by long-robed gypsies,
and cynicism.
you walked just behind,
pulled me back
two decades
into the innocence
of a three-year old;
taught me love again,
laughter, sunshine,
pink-eared monkeys,
and half a dozen
different types
of goodbye kisses.

you taunt, i scream;
i start, you end;
we laugh, i hold you tight,
still waiting
for the start
of the sixty-six years
and the teeny tiny half.

i cannot, cannot
live with you
cannot live
outside of you;
you are me,
and i you.

holding on, letting go

how, how
do i not want you -
let me count the whys.

i poked, probed
never trusting her whoring ways -
happiness -
promiscuous bitch -
bleeding dry and leaving.
you brought her with you,
watching silently as she filled me up,
broke me down,
raising rivers
where streams could hardly
ever flow.

it started innocently enough;
a touch here, a smile there,
shared smokes, bad coffee,
instant conversation.
soon, you stood me
in the middle of a noisy street,
face flushed, misplaced silences,
eyes locked.
one fearless moment of leaning over ,
one butterfly kiss.

you loved me, didn't you -
from the first time
we clutched hands?
you loved me -
when i slipped the words out,
people watching all but us?
you held back, looked away,
broke my heart.
how - you asked me -
could you love me so bloody much?
you already did.
you loved - past present continuous.

we walked, you left,
i ran, you came back,
we cried, laughed,
made wild, passionate love.
slowly, but slowly you fell
in love with me.

i hold on -
afraid there will never
be a you again,

i let go -
remembering you will
always be you.

half a life of
waiting, watching,
falling, feeling,
looking, listening,
kissing, caressing.

hold my hand as we go through the difficult parts.
hold me as we grow apart,
love me from a distance.

i love you -
but maybe love
was not meant
to compete with forever.

i love you -
but maybe love
is sluttier than happiness.

hold me still,
watch me, own me, care.
i cannot die all over again.

i love you so
bloody much,
so much it hurts
to be holding on
and letting go.

never ever never

do you know, love,
if the last time
will
for ever
never
be the last time?

you kiss me —
once, twice
i lose count —
your kisses drawn
urgent
in half-inch circles
around my lips,
kisses drawn out
to stand us through
lonesome never-ending years.

one moment of
kissing, forgetting;

one moment
of devouring lips,
freezing memories;

one moment
of togetherness;

one moment of
holding on, letting go;

you said "be strong"
i say "no"
you said "love me not"
i say "i do"
you said "kill the world"
i say "i will, with you"

in salt-water tongue
probing mine
i find
angled passion, and
detangled love.

"i wish" i said
between tears
"you didn't have to go"
"i wish" i said,
"i didn't have to
let you go"

you cry,
you – stoic keeper of dreams – cry.
in darkness, in your
opening act of weakness,
you cry.

not looking back,
i bound across the street
made blurry through
inebriated eyes;
you are gone.

an electronic screen
vibrates with your name,
your voice crackles,
i cry.

do you know, love,
i know
our last time,
can for ever never
be the last time.
